Meaning
Production quality metrics evaluate the consistency of output between identical chambers within a single multi-cavity mold. Achieving a high multi-cavity balance means every unit produced in one injection cycle has identical weight, density and dimensional tolerances. When this balance is absent, one cavity may produce oversized parts while another produces short shots.
Shot Uniformity
Inspection of these variations involves checking for discrepancies in wall thickness across sixteen or thirty two separate pieces. If the multi-cavity balance is poor, the injection pressure is not reaching all recesses at the same time or force. This failure often stems from asymmetrical runner lengths or varying cooling rates.
Thermal Distribution
Maintaining an even temperature across the tool block ensures that the material solidifies at a predictable rate in every pocket. Because plastics shrink as they cool, multi-cavity balance prevents some parts from being rejected for poor fit during downstream assembly. Monitoring the cooling lines helps stabilize these thermal conditions over long shifts.
Quality Variance
High standard deviations in unit weight suggest the tool is failing to fill evenly. If this problem persists, the operator must shut down specific cavities to maintain the yield of the remaining ones. Precise balance allows for the highest possible throughput with minimal material waste.
