Meaning
Inspection strategies that allow for the examination of only a fraction of submitted lots when the supplier demonstrates a consistent history of quality. Implementing skip lot sampling reduces the cost and time spent on routine oversight. It is used in mature sourcing relationships where the risk of failure is known to be low.
Trust Efficiency
The process rewards reliable manufacturers by allowing their shipments to move through the supply chain more quickly. Under skip lot sampling, the inspector might only check one batch out of every five. This reduction in workload allows the quality team to focus their energy on new or problematic vendors.
Eligibility Threshold
A factory must pass several consecutive lot inspections without a single failure to qualify for the program. This skip lot sampling status is not permanent and can be revoked if a defect is found in a later batch. The criteria for entering and staying in the program are clearly defined in the quality agreement.
Monitoring Intensity
Even when a supplier is on a reduced schedule, the buyer continues to perform occasional spot checks. This monitoring ensures that the skip lot sampling does not lead to a drop in the manufacturing standards. Maintaining a high level of vigilance prevents the factory from becoming complacent about their quality control processes.
If a single shipment fails an audit, the supplier immediately returns to a normal inspection schedule until they prove their reliability again.
