Meaning
Critical milestones in a letter of credit define the final date by which the beneficiary must present the required documents to the bank. This expiry date represents the hard deadline for the seller to complete all contract actions. After this date, the bank’s undertaking to pay is cancelled.
Deadline Action
The seller must complete shipment and document presentation before this deadline. Once the expiry date has passed, the bank is no longer obligated to pay the seller. This date ensures the transaction cannot remain open indefinitely, protecting the buyer’s credit lines.
Seller Risk
If the presenting bank receives the documents even one day after this date, the presentation is invalid. The exporter faces the risk of unpaid goods sitting on a ship or at the port. This makes the date the deadline for the exporter’s logistics team to track.
Extension Mechanism
Amendments to extend this date must be agreed upon by both the buyer and the seller before the bank updates the instrument. This extension requires a application by the importer and often incurs amendment fees. Failing to extend the deadline when production delays occur can cancel the entire financial protection of the credit, forcing the supplier to ship under an open account or wait for a new trade instrument to be issued.
