Meaning
Operational analysis determines whether a manufacturing line can consistently produce parts within the required engineering limits. A process capability assessment is a statistical study that measures the relationship between the natural variation of a machine and the tolerances defined by the customer. It predicts the likelihood of the process producing defective parts in the future.
This calculation gives a buyer confidence that a supplier is not just lucky, but actually has the process under control.
Statistical Tool
The result of this study is usually expressed as an index number like Cp or Cpk. A high value in a process capability assessment indicates that the machine is very stable and that the parts it makes are far from the rejection limits. If the value is low, even a small shift in the environment could cause a wave of non-conforming goods.
Engineers use this data to decide if a new product should be moved to a more precise machine.
Production Stability
Conducting this check involves taking measurements from a sequence of units produced under normal conditions. It reveals if the process is centered on the target value or if it is drifting toward one of the edges. A process capability assessment is more than a one time test; it is a roadmap for maintenance.
When the capability starts to drop, it is a signal that tools are wearing out or that the raw material has changed.
Supplier Selection
Procurement professionals use these assessments to compare the technical strength of different vendors. A factory that can show a high capability for a difficult part is a lower risk partner than one that just promises to meet the spec. This data is often required during the onboarding phase of a new contract.
It proves that the supplier has the right equipment and the right expertise to handle the job without constant failures.
